British Goblins Welsh FolkLore Fairy Mythology Legends and Traditions eBook Wirt Sikes

This book was published in 1880, when Victorian preoccupation with fairies was in full bloom, (The Folklore Society having just been founded in 1878). Everyone was mad about fairies, and William Wirt Sikes had the skill, the inclination and the opportunity to turn his complete attention to the subject.

We are thus treated to both an unfiltered view of how the Victorians approached and understood fairy lore and we are afforded a reliable account of the fairy lore that was then current. For those interested in Victorian life and thought, and who are willing to read between the lines, this book is a real find. And for those most interested in getting closer to the source and just enjoying Welsh folklore, fairy mythology, legends and traditions this book is a bonanza.

And here's a pleasant surprise. There are many understandable gripes and complaints about the poorly formatted and incomplete print-on-demand versions of this public domain book. But, I have read and am commenting on the free Kindle version that appears on the Amazon.com site. This version is over 400 pages, includes all four "books" and is perfectly well formatted for a Kindle Touch. It even has an active index, although it lacks illustrations. This is easily the most generous and useful Kindle freebie I have found.

But back to the book. It is much, much more than solely a collection of fairy stories, (if you've read about one bag of fairy gold that turned into a bag of cockleshells you've read them all). We get fairies, Tylwyth Teg, Bogies, fairy music, fairy rings, the devil, death portents, and goblins. But then we move on to "quaint old customs", Christmas customs, courtship rituals, stones and dragons. It's like a huge bottomless cabinet of every fantasy prop and element, with dashes of local Welsh color and custom popped in for variety. What an entertaining find.

So, if you want a treasure chest of stories, bits and pieces told straight from the Victorian heart, this is a fine choice.

British Goblins Welsh FolkLore Fairy Mythology Legends and Traditions eBook Wirt Sikes Reviews

What a bummer. I didn't know I was going to get a copy of the book in this format but it is the book non the less.
Reading this gave me a fascinating look at folk-lore and fairy stories from someone who was much closer to the time period than we are. Some of the chapters were dull, and many of the stories were redundant, but I enjoyed it overall and recommend it.
If you are into folklore from the British Isles, then you should like this book. Very interesting read. I did find myself looking up Welsh pronunciations and translations more than I would have liked to and I did have some difficulty in finding some of them, but it made me realize what an interesting language Welsh is. I might even try to learn it someday.
I didn't think this was going to be very interesting when I downloaded it, but wow! It really goes in depth into old Welsh fairy lore. The books a snapshot of what Welsh fairy lore was at the end of the 1800s - even offering the names of different types of fairies and descriptions of what they were said to do. Super fascinating for anyone interested in Celtic mythology.
I personally don't care for paper back side books. But in order to get books you can't find any more you have to buy republish in paper back. The book is thin and oddly formatted but all the information seems to be there. If you don't the format set up of the book then it's a great deal. But if your looking for correct publishing book lay out, keep looking this republishing isn't for you.
This is an in depth look at the Welsh perception of the little people written in 1880 by a US Diplomat serving in Wales.

Since this was not written by an anthropologist or a folklorist, the information is not as well organized as it might be if it had been assembled and compiled by a professional.

Still... it is a great general resource.
This is a reissue of a late 1800's ms. written by an American diplomat, Wirt Sikes, compiled while serving in England. Exceptionally well-written, entertaining and filled with all sort of great little tales and pieces of folklore. If you're into myth and folklore this is an Xlnt read with solid references whether your interest is academic or you're looking for character-types and characters for the Hobbit-type fantasy you're planning to write. Too many folklore tomes are dry and boring . . . not this one.
